Press Release!</title><content type='html'>USC’S PHD IN LITERATURE AND CREATIVE WRITING PROGRAM PRESENTS:&lt;br /&gt;THE LOUDEST VOICE: WORDS AND MUSIC&lt;br /&gt;Authors, artists, and musicians gather at Chinatown’s Mountain Bar&lt;br /&gt;Los Angeles, CA, November 10, 2006—USC’s Ph.D. in Literature and Creative Writing Program is pleased to announce the second reading of The Loudest Voice, a new series that pairs established authors with emerging L.A. writers.&lt;br /&gt;This reading will feature special guest Glen David Gold, acclaimed author and journalist.&lt;br /&gt;Glen David Gold is the author of Carter Beats the Devil, an international best seller currently translated into 14 languages.  He has written fiction, essays and memoir for Playboy, McSweeney's and the New York Times Sunday Magazine.  He has also contributed work to many anthologies that were remaindered as quickly as they were printed.&lt;br /&gt;Katherine Karlin's short story "Bye-bye Larry," which was first published in ZYZZYVA, won a 2007 Pushcart Prize and is included in the current pushcart anthology. Her fiction has also appeared in North American Review, Other Voices, and elsewhere, and she has written theater reviews and arts features for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Los Angeles Daily News.&lt;br /&gt;Cody Todd has had work appear in Third Coast, LitRag, Armchair Citizen, Lake Effect and Forklift. He has an MFA from Western Michigan University. His manuscript, Graffiti Signature, was a finalist for the 2006 Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize from Kent State Press.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Andrew Allport has performed with a number of different bands from L.A. to New Hampshire. His recent solo performances and EP include guitar, vocals, and whistling. His music is neither here nor there, but somewhere between hither and thither, rhyme and reason, sound and fury.&lt;br /&gt;The event will take place on Wednesday, December 6, 2006, from 8:00-10:00 pm. An artist reception, featuring work by Blake Lemons, Andrea Breitman, Helen Lord, and other L.A. artists, starts at 8:00 pm, followed by the reading at 8:30 pm. No cover. Ensconced among the bright red decor and geometric paper lanterns, the crowd will enjoy poems and short stories by three emerging writers, interspersed with music by local bands.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;The lineup for the first reading includes poets and fiction writers currently studying at USC under such luminaries as David St. John, Aimee Bender, Mark Irwin, Percival Everett, Carol Muske-Dukes and T.C. Boyle.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;The inaugural event will take place September 20, 2006, from 8:00-10:00pm at The Mountain Bar, 473 Gin Ling Way, Los Angeles, CA  90012. There is no cover charge.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Reader Bios:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;Amaranth Borsuk&lt;/span&gt; was featured as one of L.A.'s emerging poets at the 2005 Los Angeles Poetry Festival "Newer Poets X" reading at Central Library. Her poems have appeared or are forthcoming in The Antioch Review, Smartish Pace, The Los Angeles Review, and Hotel Amerika.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;Jillian Burcar&lt;/span&gt; writes both fiction and poetry. In the spring of 2006, she collaborated with composer Ben Phelps on a musical setting of her dramatic poem "Recently Living Rabbits," which was performed by soprano Rochelle Martin at the University of Southern California. She is currently collaborating with composer Isaac Shankler on a series of orchestrations of her poems.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;Bryan Hurt&lt;/span&gt; was born and raised in Medina, Ohio.  He graduated with honors from the Ohio State University where his short story "All The Way To Dallas" won the 2005 Jacobson Award for Best Undergraduate Fiction.  His fiction has appeared in the journals Mosaic and dogcrash.  Currently he is studying creative writing and literature at the University of Southern California and is compiling a collection of short stories.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;Saba Razvi&lt;/span&gt; received her BA in English &amp; Creative Writing from Creighton University and her MA in the same from the University of Texas in Austin. Some of her works may be found in Diner, Karamu, Anthology, &amp;amp; Crucible. She is currently a Middleton Fellow at the University of Southern California.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Musician Bio:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;Andrew Allport &lt;/span&gt;grew up transferring his parents' vinyl Pete Seeger albums to tapes so he could listen to them at school on his state-of-the-art, four pound, Sony Walkman. Later, with money from a candy-bar scam, he bought his first Compact Disc: Whitney Houston's soundtrack to The Bodyguard. His music is neither here nor there, but somewhere between hither and thither, rhyme and reason, sound and fury.
